Hot Rolled Method
Rolled Asphalt Pavement
What is Rolled Asphalt Pavement?
It is a paving method that pre-coated single size crushed stones are uniformly sprayed on asphalt mixture and compaction and penetration of crushed stones are done by rolling simultaneously.
(Fig. 1)

The surface appearances are like as the photograph below.

Fig. 1 The Concept of Rolled Asphalt Pavement

Features
  • Excellent durability because of water impermeability.
  • Excellent at skidding resistance.
  • Excellent at cracking resistance.
  • Excellent at raveling resistance to tire chains.
  • Using bright colored aggregates or colored aggregates, bright colored pavements or colored pavements are possible.
Where to use?
  1. For surface layer of mountaineous roads where raveling resistance and skidding resistance are required.
  2. For curve sections and intersections where visibility of road surface and skidding resistance are required.
  3. For pavements in tunnels where brightness is required (by use of bright colored aggregates).
  4. For bus lanes where distinction of lanes are required (by use of colored aggregates).
  5. For streets where landscape is important (by use of colored aggregates).
Procedure of Construction
  • According to Asphalt Pavement Manual
  • Typically by paver
  • spray aggregates uniformly by chip-spreader or by man power
  • required aggregates weight by asphalt pavement manual 8-12kg/m2 5-8kg/m2 is recommended for good result
  • carefully roll pre-coated chips into asphalt mixture
  • strengthen the binding between pre-coated aggregates and asphalt mixture
