The Test of Ignition and Burning of W-Wood (Part 1)

1. Introduction
As W-Wood is a mixture of wood and urethane resin, a simple doubt arise. That is: it may burn by thrown cigarettes. Thus we had a test acknowledging if W-Wood burn.

2. Test Method
A fired cigarette was laid on dry W-Wood pavement and observed until the cigarette was burn out (Photo-1). Two cases were tested. One is done at the condition of no wind and the other is done at the weak wind where cigarette nearly flown away (0.8-1.5 m/sec).

3. Result
*The time length of cigarette burning out were 15 minutes at no wind and 9 minutes at weak wind.
*In both cases in no wind and in weak wind, the pavement was scorched but not get into flaming (Photo-2)

The Test of Ignition and Burning of W-Wood (Part 2)

1. Introduction
The fire of cigarette did not cause flaming. Now we tried to acknowledge if burning by gas burner cause flaming.

2. Test method
W-Wood was paved on an asphalt pavement by the depth of 25 mm. Then the surface was burned by gas burner. The time length of heating were 30 sec, 60 sec, and 120 sec.

3. Result
W-Wood burn in flame when directly heated by gas burner (photo-3). But when the burner was apart some distance, the flame became small (photo-4, 5) and vanished by itself (photo-6). Figure-1 shows the relation between the time length of heating directly by burner and the time required to fade out.
After fire faded out, the burnt out part was brushed off by wire brush and observed the burnt depth. The relation between burnt depth (deepest place, photo-7) and time length of burning is shown on Figure-2.

4. Conclusion
W-Wood is burnt by direct fire flame. But when direct flame is put apart some distance, the fire is extinguished self-wise. Taking account of the low water content as 5 % of wood chips, W-Wood is thought a material hard to burn.
The following photos are the burning stages of W-Wood burning at 120 sec of burning time.
