At where ultra heavy traffic
is anticipated

Here are discussed on the pavement which cope with ultra heavy vehicles such as large fork-lifts, straddle carriers and etc. at port yards and aprons at airports and loading spots of factories. And as containers are to be laid on the road surface as well as heavy vehicles, not only rutting resistance but also bearing capacity against these heavy loads must be excellent.

Though concrete pavements or semi-flexible pavements are desirable for these places, it seems difficult to select these kind of pavement taking account of the cost. So, when considering of the cost, asphalt concrete pavements are desirable.

We WatanabeSato had studied on large stone asphalt mixture (maximum aggregate size:40 mm) and found that it can afford above mentioned performances. We named this asphalt mixture Hi-Stac as brand name.

Hereunder are explained on typical use of this mixture.
(1) The caseHi-Stac 40 (maximum aggregate size:40 mm)
was adopted as surface course, (Fig. 1)

then plant fibers are added by 0.4 percent of the weight of mixture in order to improve durability and surface texture.

(2) The case the combination ofHi-Stac 40 (maximum aggregate size:40 mm) and 20 mm depth ofW-mastic type II
was adopted (Fig-2),
Large stone mixtures form rough surface texture compared to dense graded mixture of maximum aggregate size: 20 mm. At carriageways for ordinary vehicles, use of W-Mastic type II (maximum aggregate size:5 mm) is recommended to improve vehicle running performances.
In addition, sinceW-Mastic type II is excellent at water protection, the durability of pavement is enhanced.
