At where Raveling is afraid of

The Raveling of asphalt pavement occurs prominently in snowy cold areas by tire chains of vehicles in winter snowy season.   As asphalt mixtures for these areas, Raveling resistant mixtures that contain more fines with rich asphalt content are used. However, at where considerably large traffic are present, often the problem of rutting occurs.

The measures for Raveling prevention prevalent recent days are that to use asphalt mixtures for ordinary areas adding a little more asphalt content, to use modified asphalt or to use special kind of mixtures. Besides, the aggregate are selected from less abrasion loss aggregate as possible as possible.

Hereunder are introduced the Raveling resistant mixtures that we WatanabeSato are prepared to supply.
Heavy vehicles traffic volume
(veh/day/direction)
Name of mixture Outline of mixture
5,000 or less W-Spax
(for Raveling resistance)
A dense grade mixture of 20 mm top size using extra high viscosity modified asphalt. It can afford both Raveling resistance and rutting resistance.
Dynamic stability= about 3,000 wheel passes/mm
W-Mastic type I)(used at where heavy vehicles traffic volume is over 3,000 Special type of gap graded mixture using plant fiber and modified asphalt (called as SMA). Though asphalt content is rich that is 6 %, it is also excellent at rutting resistance. Dynamic stability=typiclly 4,000-7,000 wheel passes/mm
5,000 or more W-Epoc A special gap graded mixture using combined binder of asphalt and epoxy resin.
Raveling resistant mixtures are able to cope with heavy traffic by the combination of the aggregate gradation, kinds of aggregate and binders.
